Jo Sutherland

Managing director

As managing director of Magenta Associates, Jo’s mission is to help progressive organisations communicate clearly and credibly with their audiences. She leads PR and marketing campaigns for businesses across the workplace and built environment sectors, as well as complementary fields such as sustainability, HR, technology, hospitality, education and energy.

A former journalist and editor, Jo has been published in titles including Management Today, Talk Business, Professional Manager Magazine, Smart Buildings Magazine, Work Design Magazine, FX and Work&Place, and continues to contribute as a guest writer to Workplace Insight, Construction News, Facilities Management Journal, Facilitate and i-FM. She has also developed papers, reports and magazines for institutions and associations in the built environment, including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the International Facility Management Association and Commercial Interiors UK (formerly the British Contract Furnishings Association).

Jo leads Magenta’s work on AI in communications, commissioning a white paper and partnering with the University of Sussex to research how communicators use generative AI, resulting in a widely shared industry report. Backed by a government grant, she has also designed and delivered an AI upskilling programme at Magenta to help teams and clients understand where AI adds value and where it does not. She is currently studying for a Master’s in AI, Ethics and Society at the University of Cambridge, where her research focuses on AI’s societal and environmental impacts, and the opportunities and risks of its adoption in business.

Alongside her work at Magenta, Jo explores ethical questions through creative writing. Her first play, V+15 (London, 2020), inspired by the murder of filmmaker Theo van Gogh, examined the societal impact of censorship. Her second play, Lucy’s Pharmakon (Brighton, 2024), explored how technology can both help and hinder mental health and wellbeing. Work on her third play is currently paused while she completes her degree!
