Behind the badge: What our B Corp journey really looked like

We did it. After a long, challenging but rewarding process, Magenta Associates officially became a Certified B Corporation in April 2025, joining a global network of for-profit businesses committed to meeting the highest standards of social and environmental impact, transparency, and accountability.

But what does that journey actually entail?

Starting with a question

It all began with a simple yet profound question: What does a ‘good business’ actually look like? Seeking guidance, we turned to the B Corp framework, which evaluates companies across five key areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.

We weren’t chasing a badge. Our aim was to make better choices and evolve in a direction that will make a more positive impact. The B Corp framework provided a roadmap for this evolution.

Embedding purpose into practice

Before even considering certification, we had already implemented several initiatives aligned with B Corp values:

  • 4.5-day work week (with full-time pay), enhancing our team’s work-life balance.
  • Transitioning to an employee-owned model in 2024, giving our people a larger strategic say and financial stake in the company’s future.
  • Curating guides and designing policies and training programmes to ensure ethical communication practices.
  • Offering pro bono PR opportunities to not-for-profit organisations and local initiatives.
  • Operating entirely on renewable energy.

As we improved and saw the positive impact of these changes, we realised we were already living the B Corp values. So, we embarked on the rigorous certification process.

The certification process

The B Corp certification process is comprehensive. It involves:

  1. B Impact Assessment (BIA): A detailed evaluation of our practices across the five key areas.
  2. Verification: Providing evidence and third-party verification to support our BIA responses.
  3. Legal Commitment: Amending our Articles of Association to include a commitment to consider all stakeholders in decision-making.

After thorough evaluation, Magenta achieved a verified score of 126.1, well above the minimum threshold of 80. Even so, we recognise there is more we can do to boost that score when the time comes to recertify in 2028.

Why it matters

Becoming a B Corp is more than a certification; it’s a commitment to continuous improvement and accountability. It aligns with our mission to harness the power of communications to drive social and environmental change.

This journey has been about embedding purpose into every aspect of our business, ensuring that we not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk.
