Magenta launches accredited Carbon Literacy course for built environment communicators

New training helps marketing and communications teams across facilities management and the wider built environment understand climate change and talk about it credibly.

Magenta Associates has launched a Carbon Literacy course built specifically for marketing and communications professionals in the built environment. Accredited by the Carbon Literacy Project, it gives communicators a confident grasp of the science and the practical skills to talk about climate action honestly, at a time when green claims face growing scrutiny.

The built environment is both exposed to a warming climate and holds some of the largest opportunities to cut emissions – embodied carbon alone accounts for around 20% of UK built-environment emissions and is currently unregulated. Yet communicators are often asked to tell their organisation’s sustainability story without any formal climate training. This course closes that gap.

The course will be delivered by Greg Bortkiewicz, an account director at Magenta who is certified as Carbon Literate. It covers the essentials of climate science, impacts and policy, the sector’s biggest levers, from scope 3 to embodied carbon, and credible communication, including how to avoid greenwashing and greenhushing. Every learner commits to at least two meaningful actions and submits an evidence form to be certified Carbon Literate.

Greg Bortkiewicz, account director at Magenta, said: “Carbon literacy is more important than ever before considering the unprecedented heat we’ve experienced this summer. This course will give marketing and communications teams the knowledge and confidence to talk about climate change with honesty and authority. Defining two meaningful actions are a great way to take responsibility for change; I set myself multiple actions when I became Carbon Literate accredited and they have truly impacted how I approach sustainability both at work and at home.”

The course suits in-house and agency teams across facilities management, workplace, construction, property, security and cleaning, as well as sustainability and environment teams and senior leaders. Magenta is a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation and a certified B Corp, with five of its six full-time team certified Carbon Literate.
